Peak Member Spotlight: Maria Sanders

This month we get to know Maria a little better! Maria has been consistent with her training while creating a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle as a wife, mother, grandmother and more! Let’s get to know her more….

Who are you? Tell us a little about yourself, your family and your life….

Well my family roots are in Alabama but I was raised in the Atlanta area and been here all of my life.  Professionally I am Certified Public Accountant and just recently accepted a position as the Financial Controller/Human Resources Manager for a company in Buford.  This is my first job that doesn’t come with a 35 mile commute in 20 years so I am excited to see how my life changes with an extra 3 hours of free time.

I have been happily married to Mike Sanders for 9 years.  We don’t have children together but I have 2 grown children from my first marriage, Kaylee and Will.  Kaylee has 2 children, Rhett and Emmeline, with another girl on the way this month.  Mike has 2 daughters, Caroline and Elizabeth.  Elizabeth lives with us and is going into 10th grade at Buford High School.

What brought you to Peak?

Although I have always enjoyed sports and being physically active, a few years ago found myself stuck in an extremely stressful job with no time for personal activity and was unacceptably out of shape.  I left that job for one with lower stress and started working out daily at another gym.  It seemed like I hit a plateau in my fitness progress so my son, Will, convinced me that crossfit at Peak would challenge me more and that I would love it.  And I do love it.

How long have you been a member at PSF?

I think I started in November of 2016 so not even a year yet.

What is something we might not know about you?

I absolutely love being a grandmother.  I can’t get enough of those sweet little angels and wanting to keep up with them for years to come is another motivation for my time at Peak.

What is your favorite song to workout to?

If I had to pick one, Linkin Park, One Step Closer, might be one of my faves.

Who is your hero?

Jesus Christ and I try to follow his example every day.

What hobbies do you have?

I play tennis and quilt as much as I can.

What is it that keeps you coming back?

The coaches and the members all encourage participation regardless of where you are in the learning process.  I love that personal achievement is the emphasis and that everything is scalable to your personal level.  There is also a strong sense of community.  I actually feel like part of an alternate family.

What motivates you to work hard?

I want to continue to improve my endurance and strength so I know I have to give it my best in order to get the benefit.  Once the hour workout is done I can’t get that time back so I don’t want to waste the time and the effort by slacking, although some days just getting through the workout is my max.

What is one thing that you couldn’t go a day without?

 My family and Diet Coke

What is one of your big goals for 2017?

I want to be able to do pullups and snatch.

Thanks Maria! We are grateful for your friendship and always positive attitude! Keep working hard!
